This trip taught the club about team collaboration skills and how to act when under pressure and in difficult situations. An example of this happened when the team had to select an alliance best suited for them to help win the elimination matches. An alliance is when one team allies themselves with another competing team. Only teams ranked in the top eight are allowed to select a team to compete with them as an alliance partner. This can be a drastic decision because every team is required to have an alliance to compete in the eliminations, and without a good alliance, teams have no chance in advancing to the finals.
They chose to ally with a team from The Potomac School from McLean. The team put a lot of thought and effort into making this decision, and they consider criteria such as the team’s average score per match that day, which field element they are best at scoring, how well they collaborate with one another, and most importantly how they think they will benefit the team if they are chosen.
Freshman team captain, RJ Weaver, encouraged the team after they lost their first elimination match, “It’s okay if we lost. At least we know that as a team we did our best and are representing our school as seventh out of forty-eight in Virginia; that’s a big deal.”
MPHS’s VEX Robotics team is recognized as a top ten team in robotics in Virginia. They will advance to the Nationals competition in Iowa April 7th-9th.
