The first year for The MPHS Script was filled with successes, welcomed challenges, and a new year for student involvement. With the guidance of Mr. Gammill, Miss Priester, and teacher support, The MPHS Script established itself as Manassas Park High School’s very own online school news website. The goal has been to develop a club with a strong student community to connect everyone at MPHS through the use of journalism. As Mrs. McCracken says, “It was very well written and an excellent opportunity for students to experience journalism.”
Throughout the year, The MPHS Script has covered various sports events, school events, popular lifestyle trends, and much more. Armored with skilled and enthusiastic writers, The MPHS Script tackled several events, including the winter pep rally, parent teacher conferences, the new school calendar, the tablet roll-out, and Lockheed Martin’s engineering for minorities.
Along with news, articles were written about several lifestyle events throughout the year. Reviews on the releases of new movies, book reviews, and book to movie comparisons. These events also included the choir concerts throughout the year, how to predict snow, the school musical, RENT.
Submissions were made by student contributors throughout the year. Whether it be for Photo of the Month, artwork, or short stories, The MPHS Script experienced satisfactory student involvement in the website. Wendy Nguyen, freshman, submitted various art pieces, and was by far, the biggest contributor. Kyler Carlson, senior, won the December Photo of the Month contest, Leybis Alcantara, junior, won the January and March Photo of the Month contests, and Nafeesa Lodi, sophomore, won the February Photo of the Month contest.
To promote even more student involvement, extra credit was offered in Mrs. McCracken’s English classes. Students enjoyed contributing to the website to earn extra points, even if they weren’t staff of The MPHS Script. Next year, Mrs. Green will be offering extra credit in her classes. In short, big things are coming!
We have a lot of things planned for next year, including fun fundraisers, new opportunities, increased event coverage, and a whole lot more!
Thanks for a great year.
